"I make bagels. Bagels is what I make," says Mr. Belinsky, whose small shop is known for selling the best bagels in town. His loyal customers—Mrs. Alperstein, Frankie and Josh—come in every day for their favorites. When a new bakery opens up across the street, Mr. Belinsky decides he must make cookies and fancy pastries to keep up with the competition. But something is missing and only Mr. Belinsky’s flour-covered hands hold the secret….

About the illustrator…

Stefan Czernecki has illustrated, and written or co-written, 14 books for children. He has also done illustrations for children’s magazines, worked in film, and designed posters for Canadian ballet and theater companies. Born in Germany, Stefan lived in Winnipeg, Toronto and Calgary before moving to Vancouver, where he now makes his home. He has traveled widely in Central America, where many of his stories are set.
